Class Topics
We are working hard to finalize the topics that will be available at Seminar. However, to give you some idea of what you might expect we have listed some of the topics covered at past seminars.
- Civil Liability
- We will review the principles and concepts associated with civil liability and police misconduct cases. This course will also examine recent court decisions as they relate to law enforcement training, as well as providing suggestions for reducing department/instructor liability.
- Elements of Arrest
- Here we will discuss the principles associated with establishing that a crime has been committed. This will serve as a foundation for other discussions such as Tactical Report Writing, Escalation of Force and Civil Liability.
- The Monadnock Baton Chart
- The level of risk of resultant trauma by color code classification will provide a head-to-toe review of important anatomical structures of the human body. An easy-to-learn and explain color code scheme called the Monadnock Baton Chart will be discussed in terms of medical research.
- Instructional Development: Teaching Psychomotor Skills
- This section centers on how to teach adult learners psychomotor skills. Various teaching methodologies will be reviewed with emphasis given to baton and empty hand training as well as other psychomotor skills such as handcuffing and firearms training.
- Instructor Responsibility and Training
- We will review course management techniques and procedures associated with safe teaching. The Council's various certification programs, as well as Council policies will also be reviewed.
- Patterns of Movement and Reinforcement Exercises
- Teach six easy-to-learn movements that increase the effectiveness of certain baton and openhanded techniques through dynamics of movement.
- Professional Image
- Be provided graphic and systematic ways to create a more professional image through knowledge, a positive mental attitude and much more.
- Qualification of a Proficiency Test
- We will discuss ways to establish objective minimum acceptable performance standards to evaluate all techniques. Several testing formats currently in use will be discussed.
- Specificity in Warm-Up Activities
- Here we will discuss ways to warm-up, as well as cool down, students so they can better participate in dynamic training.
- Tactical Report Writing
- We will discuss the principles of writing and review elements that are essential for officers to include in a police report or use of force statement. Example of police reports and use of force statements will also be examined.
- The Trainer as an Expert Witness
- This will give specific recommendations on how to prepare to give-expert testimony in a court of law. Certain strategies will be presented that are favored by plaintiff counsels to discredit or minimize an Instructor's testimony.
- Use of Force and the Formulation of Department Policy
- Here we will discuss basic principles and concepts associated with writing a report that explains a subject's resistance as it relates to the use of force policy. Examples of use of force policies and procedures from several police departments will also be examined.
